Collaborative Supervision Program
Collaborative Supervision Program
Supervisory experience for faculty members, enriched training for students.
This program gives early career faculty members the chance to gain supervisory experience by co-mentoring graduate students in statistical sciences. Program funding supports enriched training experiences for the supervised students.
- Support Amount: $15,000
- Region: National
- Deadlines: Applications from faculty members are accepted between September 15 and November 30 each year
- Program Duration: The support can be used over a two-year period
- Eligibility: Early career faculty members supervising master’s and PhD students in statistical sciences
Students engaged with biostatistics may be eligible for co-funding through the Banting-CANSSI Discovery Awards in Biostatistics. This program offers funding of up to $30,000 and has separate eligibility and application requirements (see below).
Additionally, students planning to begin a doctoral program at a university in Quebec may be eligible for a CANSSI Quebec Recruitment Scholarship of up to $7,000 annually over two years to supplement the support they receive from other funding sources (see below).

Overview
CANSSI’s Collaborative Supervision Program (CSP), formerly called the Graduate Student Enrichment Scholarship, gives early career faculty members the chance to gain supervisory experience by co-mentoring graduate students in statistical sciences alongside an experienced supervisor.
Successful faculty applicants receive $15,000 for the provision of enriched training experiences to a supervised student. Possible uses include:
- Acquisition of new knowledge and skill sets
- Exposure to new areas of research and application
- Co-discovery of new statistical methodology
- Co-supervision of thesis research
- Creation and strengthening of new and existing collaborations

What’s Involved
CSP applications are submitted by faculty members in statistical sciences who are within the first four years of their initial faculty appointment and who are serving, or will serve, as lead supervisors of a master’s or PhD student. The faculty applicant is supported by another faculty member in statistical sciences with a record of successful graduate student supervision who acts as a sponsor or co-supervisor. The supervisors design a research project for the graduate student. The program support may be used over a two-year period.
Who’s Eligible
Students
The CSP award can be used to support students currently enrolled in a master’s or PhD program in statistical sciences at a CANSSI member university as well as new students who will be entering a master’s or PhD program at a CANSSI member university during the semester in which the award begins.
Participating students are required to maintain registration at their home university during the tenure of the award.
A student may be supported by only one CSP award.
Faculty
The lead supervisor on an application must be a faculty member in statistical sciences at a CANSSI member university. Their current position must be the first tenure-track academic position they have held, and the appointment must have started within four years of the start date for the award at the time of application. Supervision may take place during the fifth and sixth years of the initial appointment.
The lead supervisor serves as the academic supervisor of the supported student. The lead supervisor on an application cannot be currently supervising a student with a CSP award.
The sponsor or co-supervisor must be a faculty member in statistical sciences who is eligible to supervise graduate students and has supervised at least one PhD student who has graduated. The supervision record and experience of the co-supervisor is a review criterion for applications.
CANSSI places restrictions on the eligibility of CANSSI-funded researchers to simultaneously apply for or receive additional funding from the same or another CANSSI program. Please refer to the simultaneous support policy on the How To Apply page for details.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Students receiving CSP support are required to take part in at least one CANSSI EDI (equity, diversity, and inclusion) event or training course. The faculty supervisors must likewise participate in at least one CANSSI EDI event, course, or activity.
Banting-CANSSI Discovery Awards in Biostatistics

CANSSI, CANSSI Ontario, and the Banting Research Foundation have partnered to offer Banting-CANSSI Discovery Awards in Biostatistics for new investigators who are within the first three years of their academic appointment at Canadian universities or at their affiliated research institutes. These new investigator awards are one-year grants of up to $30,000. They are intended to support early career investigators in biostatistics who collaborate with scientists in the fields of biomedicine, occupational health, or environmental health.
A total of four awards are available, two of which are reserved for biostatisticians based in Ontario.
The deadline to submit a Notice of Intent for the 2025–2026 funding round is early November 2025.
Visit the CANSSI Ontario website for complete eligibility requirements and application instructions.
CANSSI Quebec Recruitment Scholarship

CANSSI and CANSSI Quebec have established the CANSSI Quebec Recruitment Scholarship (CQRS).
The CQRS is a competitive program that aims to attract promising students to doctoral studies in statistical sciences at a CANSSI member university in Quebec.
Generally, the scholarship provides $7,000 per year for the first two years of a doctoral program in statistical sciences. This funding supplements the standard funding resources provided by a recipient’s supervisor and home university and is designed to act as an incentive to bring students to universities in Quebec.
Quebec faculty members are invited to add their names to a list of qualified supervisors for the next program iteration by September 30, 2025.
How to Apply
Collaborative Supervision Program applications are accepted between September 15 and November 30 each year.
