CANSSI members at the 2023 SSC Annual Meeting: Antonio Herrera Martin, François Michel Boire, Ismaïla Ba, Gracia Dong, Dylan Spicker, Deputy Director Andrea Benedetti, Director Don Estep.

The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) held its first in-person Annual Meeting since 2019 at Carleton University in Ottawa from May 28 to 31, 2023.

It was an eagerly anticipated opportunity to renew old connections and make new ones, and CANSSI Director Don Estep and Deputy Director Andrea Benedetti were present to meet with members of Canada’s statistical community during and between sessions. The occasion also gave members of CANSSI’s Collaborative Research Teams a chance to gather for consultations.

CANSSI had a booth that became a focal point for conversations and information sharing, and Andrea moderated a “Spotlight on CANSSI Postdocs” session in which CANSSI Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship recipients spoke about their research projects:

  • Ismaïla Ba (York University): “Linear Response Variational Bayes (LRVB) Approximation For A Zero-Inflated Probabilistic PCA (ZIPPCA) Model”
  • François-Michel Boire (HEC Montréal): “Capital Structure Modelling With Dynamic Programming Under Alternative Processes”
  • Gracia Dong (University of Toronto/St. Michael’s Hospital): “Analyzing Indian Mortality With Temperature Attribution Using Case-Crossover Models”
  • Antonio Herrera Martin (University of Toronto): “Classification Of FRBs”
  • Dylan Z. Spicker (McGill University): “Preserving Patient Privacy In Dynamic Treatment Regimes”

Ultimately, the four days in Ottawa offered a rich experience in terms of both content and community.
