Good things happen when we get together.
This program provides seed funding for events that have the potential to catalyze research in the statistical sciences. The objective of the program is to provide support early in the planning process in order to make it easier to attract additional support.
- Support Amount: Typical amounts range from $500 to $2,000; requests above $5,000 require additional review

Overview
This program provides seed funding for workshops and conferences that promote research in the statistical sciences. Events of all sizes are supported.
Who’s Eligible
Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students seeking support for statistical sciences–related conferences or workshops are encouraged to apply early in the planning stage. Support is provided for NSERC-eligible expenses, but preference is given to requests for support of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and young researchers.
The CANSSI Directorate will evaluate applications on:
- The area and scientific merit of the subject
- The likely impact of the event on research in the statistical sciences in Canada
- The potential of the event for fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration
- The suitability of the budget plan
- The event’s EDI initiatives
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
CANSSI is strongly committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion in the statistical sciences (EDI). We prioritize EDI goals in our own activities and work with organizers to encourage diversity in participation and an inclusive environment in the conferences and workshops we support.
Reporting
Organizers will encourage completion of CANSSI’s diversity survey and an event report is due four weeks after the end of the event.
How to Apply
Proposals with requests for CANSSI support can be submitted at any time, but ideally should be submitted early in the planning process. Proposals requesting more than $5,000 should allow for extra time for evaluation. Proposals must use the proposal application template below to be considered.
Budget
Typical requests for CANSSI support range from $500 up to $2,000.
Requests for higher amounts may be considered, but require a more stringent review process and a longer lead time. Please contact us if you would like to be considered for a request above $5,000.
Ideally, CANSSI’s support is sought early in the event planning process so that the money provided can help organizers build momentum to attract additional support. CANSSI generally does not act as the major underwriter of an event.
