This program gives faculty members at CANSSI member universities the means to provide graduate students enrolled in statistical sciences at a Canadian university with training experiences that enhance and broaden their traditional graduate education.

Students engaged with biostatistics may be eligible for co-funding through the Banting-CANSSI Discovery Awards in Biostatistics. This program offers funding of up to $30,000 and has separate eligibility and application requirements (see below).
Additionally, students planning to begin a doctoral program at a university in Quebec may be eligible for a CANSSI Quebec Recruitment Scholarship of up to $7,000 annually over two years to supplement the support they receive from other funding sources (see below).

Overview
The CANSSI Graduate Student Enrichment Scholarships program supports enhancement of graduate studies in statistical sciences through co-advising.
This enrichment is designed to:
- Help students acquire new knowledge and skill sets
- Provide exposure to new areas of research and application
- Encourage the co-discovery of new statistical methodology
- Provide co-supervision of thesis research
- Create new and strengthen existing collaborations
What’s Involved
Master’s and PhD students are jointly supervised by a faculty member in statistical sciences within the first four years of their initial faculty appointment and a faculty member in statistical sciences with a record of successful graduate student supervision. The program support may be used over a two-year period.
Who’s Eligible
Students
GSES scholarships are available for students in statistical sciences who are currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program and new students who will be entering a master’s or doctoral degree program at a CANSSI member university during the semester in which the scholarship begins.
Participating students are required to maintain registration at their home university during the tenure of the award.
A student may hold only one GSES scholarship.
Faculty
The lead (main, principal, formal academic) supervisor of the student must be a faculty member in statistical sciences at a CANSSI member university. Their current position must be the first academic tenure-track position they have held and the appointment must have started within four years of the start date for the award at the time of application.
The sponsor or co-supervisor must be appointed to a position in which they are eligible to supervise graduate students. The graduate student supervision record of the sponsor or co-supervisor is a review criterion.
The following requirements must be satisfied by the faculty member applying for the GSES Scholarship:
- They are serving or will serve as the academic supervisor of the student.
- Their current position is the first academic tenure-track position they have held.
- Their current appointment must have started within four years of the start date for the award at the time of application. Supervision may take place during the fifth and sixth years of the initial appointment.
- The lead supervisor cannot be currently supervising a student with a GSES scholarship.
- The co-supervisor or sponsor must have supervised at least one PhD student who has graduated. The experience of the co-supervisor is a review criterion for applications.
CANSSI places restrictions on the eligibility of CANSSI-funded researchers to simultaneously apply for or receive additional funding from the same or another CANSSI program. Please refer to the simultaneous support policy on the How To Apply page for details.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Students receiving a GSES scholarship are required to take part in CANSSI EDI (CANSSI’s annual program of activities related to equity, diversity and inclusion), including participation in at least one CANSSI EDI event or training course. The faculty supervisors must likewise participate in at least one CANSSI EDI event, course, or activity.
Banting-CANSSI Discovery Awards in Biostatistics
CANSSI and the Banting Research Foundation have partnered to establish a new funding opportunity that fits within CANSSI’s Graduate Student Enrichment Scholarships program.
The new interdisciplinary Banting-CANSSI Discovery Awards in Biostatistics are one-year awards of up to $30,000 each, aimed to support early-career investigators in biostatistics who collaborate with scientists in the fields of biomedicine, occupational health, or environmental health.
A total of two awards may be awarded to applicants with academic appointments at Canadian universities or at their affiliated research institutes. Eligible applicants must propose innovative statistical or computational methodologies research and demonstrate interdisciplinary collaboration with a health scientist on a project that has the strong potential to advance health, health equity, and/or patient outcomes.
CANSSI Quebec Recruitment Scholarship
CANSSI and CANSSI Quebec have established the CANSSI Quebec Recruitment Scholarship (CQRS).
The CQRS is a competitive program that aims to attract talented individuals to pursue doctoral studies in statistical sciences at a CANSSI Quebec member university.
The program provides a recruitment scholarship to supplement the standard funding resources provided by a recipient’s supervisor and home university. In other words, it is designed to act as an incentive to bring promising PhD students to universities in Quebec.

Budget
Up to $15,000 will be provided towards a student stipend that can be used over a two-year period. The funds must be disbursed within two years from the start date of the scholarship.
